How Barracks Bazaar works

This is a free, members-only marketplace for your installation community. Its aim is to simplify your local community sales and allow for more streamlined management of your offers. The site never handles marketplace money or shipping — you arrange payment and hand-off directly with the other members. Others see only your display name until you commit to a transaction, and the site lets buyers and sellers message each other through its private relay.

How to list an item

1. Open Seller Menu → List an Item.
2. Add a clear title, a short description, and photos.
3. Pick the right category — it decides which detail fields appear (condition, brand, dimensions, and so on).
4. Set your price in your currency. You may add a second-currency price (for example EUR) — buyers pay one or the other based on your listed options. 
5. Choose your Pickup/Delivery options: Residential Pickup, Residential Delivery, or On-Base Pickup. Community-created common pickup points are available for quick selection, or you can enter another public location.
6. If you offer delivery, you’re able to set a delivery fee in the listing. 
7. Select the payment methods you accept (cash, Venmo, PayPal, …). Buyers see these on the listing and at checkout. (These transaction methods are handled in person and not through the site itself.)
8. Save — your item is live immediately. Manage it any time under Seller Menu → Manage My Items.

Buying

1. Add the item to your cart and Submit Order. This is your commitment to the sale. 
2. You and the seller each get a confirmation email with a private message link to arrange the hand-off and payment.
3. Goods listings may accept Best Offers if enabled by the seller — name your price and the seller can accept, decline, or counter. Offers expire after 48 hours; an accepted offer creates the order at the agreed price.
4. Services — send your details with the booking request; if the services are itemized you’ll see totals right away; if the seller needs to build a quote, they’ll reply to you to accept before anything is owed.
5. If an item in your cart says it was sold, another member bought it first — use Notify Me on the listing to join the waitlist.
6. Notifications are sent to everyone on the waitlist if the item returns to the marketplace. This avoids the perpetual “is this still available” or “next!” comment threads. There’s nothing to keep track of since the system will organize it for you.
   
   1. The system will track the waitlist, but users are notified en masse as a first come, first served model. That way the seller does not have to wade through “no longer interested” messages.
   2. Ensure your email and push notifications are enabled to get the quickest updates. 

Safety

• Use the common pickup points available in your community. 
• Inspect the item before you pay.
• Never send money or a “deposit” in advance to hold an item. There is NO situation in which anyone should send money in advance. 
• The site lets buyers and sellers coordinate through its private messages.
• Something off? Use the Report link on any listing or seller.

How this works alongside your groups

Keep posting in your usual groups — this sits alongside them and does the record-keeping a group thread was never built for. Here is what that gets you:

Real listings, not comment threads

• Every item is a proper listing — photos, condition, category, and a price in the seller’s currency (with an optional second currency shown alongside).
• No “is this still available?” — an item stays available until it sells, quantities are enforced automatically (you can’t buy more than the seller has), and an item that’s sold will offer a waitlist until the seller and buyer mark the transaction complete.
• The board stays fresh on its own — listings run 30 days; three days before the limit the seller gets an email with a one-click renew button, and unrenewed listings are delisted with a note to the seller (re-list any time). Orders left pending are completed and archived automatically after 14 days. No zombie posts from last spring.

One listing, everywhere you post

• Post once, share anywhere — create your listing here, then share it into your Facebook military sale groups. Your listing is the single source of truth: anyone who opens it sees the live status — available, sold, or waitlisted — so you stop fielding “is this still available?” from five different groups.
• Relist and it sells itself — if the item comes back, everyone on its waitlist gets a push notification and an email the moment it is available again. Your most interested buyers hear about it before you could even finish re-posting it somewhere else.

Waitlists and alerts do the watching for you

• Waitlist — if an item is sold out, join its waitlist. The moment the seller restocks, you get an instant alert.
• Follow categories — pick the categories you care about and new-listing alerts come to you, immediately or as a daily digest (new services can be pushed weekly).
• Notifications on your devices — add the site as an app (one tap, see Get the App) and alerts arrive as push notifications: sellers hear immediately when an item sells; waitlisted buyers hear immediately when it’s back. Alerts also go to your registered email.

Privacy a group can never give you

• Display names only — no real names until you agree to a sale (and then its first name and last initial), no personal profiles to browse, no phone numbers on show unless you share them in your messages. 
• Private relay messaging — “Ask a question” on any item reaches the seller without either side seeing an email address.
• Addresses stay private — shared only when a delivery actually needs one, only between the two people in the deal.

Trust that is earned, not claimed

• Seller and buyer ratings — after each completed sale, buyer and seller each rate the other with one tap from their email. Once a member has five (5) or more rated exchanges, their average shows next to their name on their listings. This allows for more transparency and confidence in repeat users. 
• Community moderators — every community can nominate their own moderators. Report buttons on items and sellers send messages to your moderators so problems get handled by a neighbor, not an algorithm. Should you not have a local moderator set up yet, it jumps to one of the site’s trusted national moderator administrators - community members nominated by their local communities based on trust. 
• Members only, community by community — you see your own installation’s marketplace. If your community is not on the list yet, request it at registration and a moderator sets it up. This is designed so that locals support locals. Our communities are very unique in the way we manage our PCS purge, and niche needs when we arrive at a new duty station. This “neighborhood” design is built specifically for you. 

A real paper trail

• Orders, not DMs — every purchase creates an order both sides can see, with confirmation emails and an invoice. Payment methods the seller accepts are listed per item and consolidated at checkout. The sale is final when both users confirm they’ve completed the handoff. 

And the extras

• Site supporters — Sellers are encouraged to contribute a small percentage of their sale back to the site to help with the upkeep. It’s never mandatory but greatly appreciated.
• AI listing assistant — Another way for users to support the site is by signing up for the optional AI listing assistant. Access is offered as a one-time period or as a 3-month, 6-month, or annual contribution, and it grants access to a generative assistant that will list your item for you.
  • Using model numbers scanned by your phone, photos, and/or any description you provide, and your minimal edits in the resulting draft, your post is published in seconds with more details than you even knew yourself. 
  • The listing description, condition and best-fit category will be added. The AI also pulls current, comparable eBay prices to help you realize your item’s value. You review and edit everything before it posts.

• No banner or popup ads, no algorithm, no data selling — free to use, run and funded by the community it serves.
